Greetings from Sermoneta Orchards!
We planted our first trees in 2010, and since then we’ve been committed to growing and producing the best hazelnuts in the Hudson Valley region and the northeast. Until recently it was very difficult if not impossible to grow hazelnuts in New York, due to an endemic disease, eastern filbert blight. Working with researchers at Rutgers University we are now able to grow blight-resistant, cold-hardy hazelnuts in New York State. We strive to employ as few chemical solutions to problems as possible. As interest in agroforestry has grown during the past decade, we’re pleased to note that hazelnut orchards both sequester carbon and rebuild topsoil; they’re ecologically sustainable and thrive on hilly land.
We post links to recipes and and write about ways to use hazelnuts on our blog pages, as well as on Instagram and on Facebook.
